How to Build Your Own GPT: An A.I. Tool Trained By You

OpenAI came out with a massive new update that has huge ramifications for teachers, leaders, coaches, and students.

OpenAI now lets anyone with a Plus account create, train, and launch their own GPTs!

Now, what does that mean?

Well, it makes the creation process of an AI tool easier then ever.

It also allows you to customize, train, and launch a tool that is for a specific purpose/use.

Before this update it took a long time to create and train your own AI chatbot. Now, the process can be completed in as little as 5 steps.

Let's break it down!

Step 1: You Need a ChatGPT Plus Account

Unfortunately, the free account does not have GPT creation capabilities just yet. Maybe it is coming at some point in time, but for now you'll need the plus account to get started. Once you are signed up you'll head over to "EXPLORE" and click on "Create a GPT".

Step 2: Name Your GPT and Describe Its Functionality and Purpose

Here you tell ChatGPT what you'd like to name your GPT. ChatGPT will name it and generate a profile pic for your app accordingly.

If you'd like to change the profile pic you can upload one of your own (providing no copyright issues).

You'll also describe in as much detail what your GPT's focus and functionality should be. You can start general and then add more specifics in a conversation with ChatGPT.

Step 3: Describe How It Should Engage

ChatGPT can engage in a variety of voices, temperatures, and tone. Choose what you want!

You can target if it is friendly, encouraging, or more academic and detailed. This is also something you can change as you interact and engage with the GPT.

Step 4: Configure and Train Your GPT

This is what makes the GPT special and unique. You can adapt and change the conversation starters, but more importantly, you can upload files to help train the GPT.

Imagine if you are creating a Rubric GPT. You'll be able to upload hundres of high-quality rubrics so it is trained by your background in rubrics.

Imagine if you are creating a Math Word Problem GPT. You'll be able to upload math problems, word problems, and stories to train it in a unique way.

Imagine if you are creating a Teacher Feedback GPT. Here you can add essays with comments, report card comments, and other types of feedback that would be useful and relevant for student work.

The possibilities are endless.

Step 5: Modify and Publish to the World

The last step is to tweak and make changes after you use your custom GPT. I changed how my GPT interacted and made it more encouraging like a coach.

I also updated the logo file and made it have a focus on Universal Design for Learning.

Then I clicked Publish! I had the option to keep it private, share with friends with a link, or make it available to everyone.

Final Thoughts

If you want to try out my Frizzle AI GPT I just made and trained, head on over to this link to give it a go (of course, it's just for plus users at the moment).

I love the ability to improve this AI tool over time, train it with better information for better outputs, and see how it can help others.

Can't wait to see what you (and your students) create with these new tools!
