Tapping into TikTok Culture: What we can learn from student creators
I'm not sure if you've seen the news recently of TikTok users vandalizing schools and property. In short, it's awful.
I was talking to my middle school daughter about this and she reminded me (very quickly) that all of her friends and most kids think this extremely disrespectful, rude, and not funny.
My wife coaches HS Field Hockey, and said her players were upset by this trend as well. To be honest, they were a bit angry it was gaining so much traction and attention on the news and social media.
We've seen how TikTok and social media can be used for negative outcomes, but there is also positives that turn up on these platforms but rarely receive the same type of attention.
One of the biggest trends is the rise of student creators. Kids and teens that are using video platforms to create in all kinds of ways. That's what we will be sharing and discussing in a free online workshop next Tuesday (Sep 28th) at 9pm EST.
Come learn from Ari Memar and Carissa Cabrera about creating videos and using content that is relevant and meaningful to engage and empower our students!
Carissa Cabrera is a marine conservation educator using media to inspire the next generation of ocean stewards. She works on behalf of Tract to engage upper elementary students in ocean, environmental, and climate learning materials so they can discover their interests in these topics.
Ari Memar is the CEO and Co-founder of Tract - the world's first peer-to-peer learning community - which he started with his former high school teacher, Esther Wojcicki. Prior to starting Tract, Ari was a Product Leader at Uber, helping start and scale several new business lines within Uber's New Mobility division.
Even if you can't make this workshop live, if you signup you'll get the replay.
In this workshop we'll move beyond talking about whether or not social media is good or bad for our students (arguments can surely be made for both sides), and instead focus on how we can use video creation as a tool for engagement and empowerment in our learning environments.
Hope to see you there!
